If you haven’t heard yet, let me catch you up. Earlier this morning, there was some scuttlebutt about Jalen Hurts and the Eagles coming to an agreement on an extension. Schefter later reported that the Birds & Hurts agreed to a $255 million extension for 5 years. $179 million guaranteed. The 5 year extension includes a no-trade clause.

Here are the top 10 reasons why this is the best move of the 2023 offseason, so far.

  1. Nicole Lynn of Klutch Sports Group.

Nicole Lynn negotiated the contract meaning that she represents the highest paid player in NFL history, while also negotiating those terms. This is huge for female representation in the NFL agency field.

  2. Hurts is locked up.

The Eagles & Hurts were able to reach an agreement before Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, or Justin Herbert got their contracts. All of these players will shoot to one up each other to be the highest paid player.

  3. No trade clause.

Hurts can’t get traded unless both Hurts & the Eagles agree to the trade. If something were to go south between the 24 year old & the Eagles, they can work together to move Jalen out.

  4. 5 year extension.

It’s not a 10 year Patrick Mahomes extension… but 5 years starting at age 24 is prime. Especially for a mobile QB like Jalen. 5 years is a good amount of time for both parties. This also gives Jalen the ability to get another big extension before the age of 30.

  5. The Eagles’ window is wide open.

The Eagles made it to the Super Bowl last season and came up just short of the win. They have a window of a couple seasons here to keep the core players around. The Eagles window to win is now. Jalen gives the Eagles a legitimate shot at their second Lombardi trophy.

  6. Direction.

The Eagles now have a clear direction in which they’re heading. The past few seasons, the Eagles have been a QB carousel. Or a “QB factory” in the words of Howie Roseman [Eagles’ GM].

  7. No questions asked.

With getting a huge contract, there is no question about Jalen’s work ethic, and how he carries himself off the field. We will still hear all the stories about Jalen living at the facility, being the first in last out daily. etc. The guy wants to win. He wants to be the best ever.

  8. The Eagles got their guy.

“The hardest part, for sure, is the scarcity of really good quarterbacks, and we got one, and we got a very special player.,- Jeff Laurie [Eagles owner]. Hurts is a guy that the whole organization looks up to and praises. He was even likened to Michael Jordan by his head coach Nick Sirianni.

  9. Hurts is signed before the draft.

If there was any doubt that Hurts would be the QB of the future, that is silenced. The Eagles now have the flexibility to make moves before/during the draft. We saw it last season with the Eagles trading for AJ Brown on draft day. The franchise is not hesitant to wheel & deal.

  10. The Eagles have Jalen Hurts.

When talking Super Bowl winning teams, what do they all have in common? The QB. In the last 10 Super Bowls, 7 of them were won by a top QB [Mahomes, Brady, & Manning]. When asking who can win the Super Bowl, you look at the QB. You ask yourself, how are the Chiefs always in contention? How were the Patriots always in an AFC Championship game at the least? Their QBs. If Jalen can continue to develop his game, he may be one of those players who can simply never be duplicated.
